민간 비영리 보험회사인 블루크로스 블루실드는 25년이라는 역사동안 확장 이전을 4번이나 한 점을 감안해 앞으로는 이러한 이동을 줄이고자 했다. 따라서 1997년 완공된 BCBS 건물은 28층의 건물로 지어졌지만, 기초와 구조는 53층까지 가능하도록 설계가 되었다. 이에 2006년에 들어서 공간 확장이 필요하다고 판단되면서 2010년 완공을 목표로 건물 증축에 들어갔다. 만약 1997년에 28층 건물을 짓고 지금 새로운 건물을 지어야 했다면, BCBS는 10년 전에 비해 월등히 인상된 대지 매입 및 공사비용에 예산을 낭비해야 했을 것이다.
이번 건물의 증축 목표는 본사의 현재 필요한 공간적 수요를 충족시키면서 또한 앞으로도 급속히 팽창해 나갈 회사의 추가적 성장을 수용할 수 있는 확장성을 고려하는 것이었다. 1단계 계획은 25개 층, 연면적 80,000㎡의 규모를 지원할 수 있는 구조 및 기계설비 인프라 계획과 동시에 진행되었다. 기초와 구조는 건물이 완전 확장될 경우를 고려해 설계/시공되었다. 수직도관 공간을 추가로 확보해 새롭게 층을 확장하는 경우 기계, 설비, 배관시스템의 독립적인 지원이 가능하도록 계획했다. 건물의 외관은 유리, 스테인리스 강, 알루미늄으로 마감되었고, 건물의 확장 후에도 조화를 이룰 수 있도록 재료를 선정했다.

Site 대지는 그랜드파크의 북단인 시카고 번화가에 위치해, 미시간 애비뉴, 밀레니엄 파크, 미시간호의 조망이 가능하다.
Program 본 프로젝트는 회사의 성장에 따라 높은 평면의 확장성과 융통성을 요구하는 의료보험회사의 본사를 계획하는 것이다. 1단계 공사는 32개 층, 연면적 133,000㎡ 규모의 개방된 환경을 제공하는 사무공간을 계획하는 것이다. 3층의 직원식당은 900명을 수용할 수 있고, 3개 층이 열린 저층부의 포디움 공간은 거리 레벨의 조경 플라자보다 한층 아래에 위치한다. 포디움에는 컨퍼런스와 연수시설, 간부용 주차장, 시설관리실(physical plant) 등이 배치된다.
Concept 미래의 끊임없는 성장에 대한 고객의 도전적 마인드를 바탕으로, 초고층 건물의 독창적인 대안은 확장성, 그 자체이다. 건물은 구조나 설비적인 문제없이 현재의 32층에서 57층까지 수직으로 확장가능하게 설계되었다. 이 부분에서 최대의 난관은 장래에 엘리베이터 실로 사용하기위한 수직샤프트의 보이드 공간을 현재 어떤 용도로 가장 효율적으로 활용할 것인가라는 것이었다.

상부로 상승하는 아트리움은 기둥이 12-9m 간격의 베이(bay)로 구성된다. 두 개의 베이에는 8대의 승객용 엘리베이터 코어가 위치하며, 또한 두 스팬을 추가로 확보하여 2단계 확장공사 시에 두 지점에 8대의 승객용 엘리베이터 코어가 배치될 수 있도록 계획했다. 중간의 베이 공간에는 개방형 계단으로 층간 이동을 편리하게 만들고, 회의나 라운지공간을 계획했다. 북측 입면에서는 건물의 매스나 형태적인 표현이 내부의 공간적 구성을 반영한다. 두 개로 나눠진 서비스와 구조코어를 활용하여, 기준층은 완전히 열린 평면구성이 가능하다. 방문객들은 지상층 로비를 통해 건물로 진입하고, 그 곳에는 상부 조명으로 장식된 타원형 디스크로 영역성을 갖는 대형 스테인리스 강으로 제작된 안내데스크가 위치한다. 직원들은 광학시스템으로 조정되는 안내데스크 옆에 위치한 회전문을 통과한다.

Site Located in downtown Chicago at the north end of Grant Park, the building overlooks Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park and Lake Michigan.

Program The building serves as the headquarters for a health care insurance company that required flexibility in its expansion plans to accommodate its growth. Phase one provides 1,430,000 square feet on 32 office floors, designed to accommodate staff in an open-office environment. A third-floor employee cafeteria serves 900 people, and a three-level podium space sits below a street-level landscaped plaza. The podium houses a conference and training facility, executive parking and the physical plant.

Concept With the client? challenge of future growth in mind, the unique solution for this high-rise is its expansion. The building is designed to be vertically expanded from the original 32 floors to 57 floors without disrupting the existing structure or building services. The major challenge was to accommodate vertical shafts for future elevators without constructing large, unutilized voids that would compromise the efficiency of the initial building.
The soaring atrium comprises five 40- by 30-foot open structural bays. Two of the bays are used for two eight-car banks of passenger elevators; two will be used for the phase two expansion with two additional eight-car banks. The center bay is reserved for an open stair to facilitate inter-floor circulation, and every three floors, the center bay is fully built out and utilized for meetings and lounge space.
On the north elevation, the building? massing and exterior expression reflect the interior organization. By utilizing two split service and structural cores, the typical floors provide a very open plan. Visitor access to the building is controlled through the ground-floor lobby, where a large, stainless steel concierge desk is defined by an illuminated oval-shaped disc overhead. Employees enter through optically controlled turnstiles adjacent to the concierge desk.
