랴우니히 박물관은 숨막히는 경관을 자랑하는 경사진 지반의 양면에 걸쳐 펼쳐져 있다. 새로운 박물관은 마치 하나의 예술작품처럼 대지에서 솟아나오는 형태로 되어 있다. 외부로 확장된 박물관 건물의 일부만이 육안으로 보일 뿐이다. 언덕을 가로지르는 박물관 주 건물은 나무가 빽빽이 들어찬 경사진 둑을 가르듯 서 있어, 약 70미터 아래에 있는 강을 비스듬히 전망할 수 있게 해준다. 건물은 접근로를 마주하고 있는 경사진 둑 위로 30미터 밖으로 캔틸레버처럼 뻗쳐 있어 먼 곳에서도 쉽게 눈에 띈다. 또한 박물관 입구는 노이하우스(neuhaus) 시내와 박물관 후원자가 소유한 역사적 성(城)을 향해 있다. 안을 들여다볼 수 있게 된 창고는 박물관의 주요 공간 중 하나이며, 완만하게 경사를 그리는 길다란 주 전시홀 입구로 인해, 방문자들은 이 ‘환상의 와인 저장고’ 를 지나게 된다. 이 언더그라운드 볼륨은 유동적인 스크린과 조명 배치 덕택에 다양한 전시 공간을 마련할 수 있다. 미술관은 건물의 중심부 양쪽에 끝이 막힌 테라스를 갖춘 160미터 길이의 전시 홀로 구성되어있다. 13미터 너비에 7미터 높이의 이 전시실은 일부가 투명한 선형 외피(skin)-채광을 보장하는 산업적 요소-로 덮여 있고 전시 홀에는 이동식 전시 패널이 갖추어져 있다. 채광이 들어오는 원뿔 형태의 그래픽 컬렉션 룸은 램프가 설치된 입구와 맞닿아 있다. 컬렉션은 메인 홀에 의해 에워싸여 있으며 입구 쪽을 향하고 있다. 그래픽 컬렉션 맨 끝에서 노이하우스 시내 쪽을 바라보는 창문은 로비로 방문자를 이끌고 골드 컬렉션은 작은 복도로 연결된 작은 전시실에 마련되어 있다. 브리지트 코반츠(brigitte kowanz)의 설치 조명이 이곳을 언더그라운드 컬렉션과 연결해준다. 외피는 건물의 대부분을 지하에 파묻음으로써 고비용을 피할 수 있었다. 땅을 파기보다는 굴착된 지반이 부지 리모델링에 이용되었다. 콘크리트, 유리, 금속판 같은 산업 자재가 육안으로 보이는 부분의 대부분을 이루고 있으며, 언덕 위에 세워진 이 건물은 완만한 주변 환경의 혜택을 톡톡히 보고 있다. 지열(地熱)식 난방 펌프는 한결 같은 대지 온도를 활용하며, 지붕으로 쏟아지는 일광은 인공 조명을 최대한 대체하여 사용하고 있다.

the museum liaunig projects out on two sides over steep-sided ground, high up in the landscape. a cut through the hill marks a precise intervention in nature. planted into the site the new museum emerges more like a work of landart. only a small part of the outstretched museum building is visible. cut through the hill, the main body of the museum slices athrough a densely-wooded, steep-sided embankment, providing an unparalleled view over the river drau seventy metres below. the building cantilevers an impressive thirty metres out, over a steep bank towards the approach road - clearly visible to approaching visitors. The museum entrance zone is orientated toward both the centre of neuhaus and the nearby historical castle owned by the museum’s patron. The substantial viewing storage depot is one of the main areas of the museum. stretching the whole length of the gently sloping approach to the main exhibition hall, visitors are accompanied by this ‘wine cellar of art’. this underground volume offers the possibility to organise a variety of exhibitions by virtue of flexible screens and lighting arrangements. The building’s core is a 160 metre long, fully daylit exhibition hall, with protected terraces at each end. the continuous 13 metre wide, 7 metre high room is covered by a part translucent curved-skin - an industrial element permitting daylight. the hall is organised with mobile exhibition panels. graphic collection and gold collection the daylight-free, gently conical room for the graphic collection lies adjacent the ramped entrance. the collection is enclosed by the main hall and is orientated towards the entrance. a window facing neuhaus at the end of the graphic collection sits over the foyer. the gold collection is a separate chamber connected by a small corridor. brigitte kowanz’s light installation accompanies the way to the underground collection. The high cost of the external envelope is avoided by sinking the majority of the building below ground. rather than removing the soil, excavated ground is used to remodel the site. industrial materials like concrete, glass and sheet metal dominate the visible portion of the building. set into the hill, the building benefits from the temperate environment. a geothermal heat pump utilises the constant temperature of the ground. rooflight substitutes artificial light as much as possible.
