: ARCHI - Flow : LATVIAN NATIONAL lIBRARY Architect: GUNNAR BIRKERTS Gunnar Birkerts Gunnar Birkerts (Latvian: Gunnar Birkerts, born January 17, 1925 in Riga, Latvia) is a Latvian-American architect who, for most of his career, was based in the metropolitan area of Detroit, Michigan. Some of his designs include the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, The Corning Fire Station, in Corning, New York, Marquette Plaza in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri, and the U.S. Embassy in Caracas, Venezuela. His latest project is the National Library of Latvia in 2014 in Riga, Latvia, the National Library called the Castle of Light whose architectural form references and draw inspiration from Latvian folklore. He studied architecture in Germany and drew my inspiration from the great Scandinavians - Alvar Aalto, Gunnar Asplund, Eero Saarinen. 싱리가(Riga)의 중심지에 새로 세워진 <라트비아(Latvia) 국립 도서관>은 최첨단 시설을 갖춘 상징적인 건축물이자 지식의 보고이다. 최대 높이 68m에 이르는 피라미드 구조가 돋보이는 이 건물은 오랜 역사를 지닌 도시를 바라보고 있는 다우가파(Daugava) 강 언덕에 자리하고 있으며, 라트비아 국가 창설 이래 문화 시설로써는 가장 많은 비용을 투자하여 완성하였다. 이렇게 완성된 <라트비아 국립 도서관>은 21세기에 북유럽 지역에 건설된 문화 시설 건물 중에서도 최대 규모를 자랑한다. 라트비아 태생의 건축가 군나르 버르커르츠(Gunnar Birkerts)가 1989년에 완성한 스케치 초안에 담겨있던 라트비아의 오랜 문화와 전통을, 모던한 감각으로 소화해낸 강렬한 이미지의 초기 디자인이 모드리스 젤치스(Modris Gelzis)를 중심으로 한 여러 라트비아 출신 건축가 및 엔지니어들이 함께 발전시키며 디자인 되었다. 그리고 현재 재정립 시기를 거치고 있는 국가적 상황과 프로젝트의 배경이 함께 어우러져 <라트비아 국립 도서관>은 ‘빛의 성’이라는 상징적이고 의미심장한 별칭으로 불리게 되었다. 미국에서 19개의 도서관, 다수의 교회 시설, 박물관 및 기타 여러 건축물을 디자인한 건축가는 빛을 매우 효과적으로 사용하는 건축가로 알려져있다. 그의 디자인을 바탕으로 완성된 이 건물에서도, 빛의 존재는 전체 건축 언어에서 핵심을 이루며 건물의 8개 층을 모두 함께 묶어주는 아트리움을 비롯, 오랜 역사를 자랑하는 리가의 시가지가 한눈에 보이는 아름다운 조망을 제공하는 독서실 등의 공간을 밝게 비춰준다. 이 건물은 국가적인 의미를 지닌 인쇄물 및 도서들을 수집 ? 보존하는 역할을 하며, 도서관의 보관장서들은 독서 및 연구 목적으로 활용 가능하도록 개방되어 있다. 최대 8백만 권의 장서를 수용할 수 있으며 350,000권의 책을 무료로 열람할 수 있다. 총 면적 40,455m2에 이르는 도서관 규모는 1,000여명을 동시에 수용할 수 있는 크기이다. 또한, 도서관에는 450석 규모의 콘퍼런스 및 콘서트 홀이 마련되어 있으며, 상황에 따라 재구성이 가능한 다양한 크기의 미팅 룸은 콘퍼런스, 협의회, 콘서트 등을 위한 훌륭한 공간을 제공해준다. 이외에도 도서 박물관, 전시장, 서점, 인터넷 카페, 레스토랑 등의 시설이 들어서 있다. 한편, 빌 & 멜린다 게이츠(Bill & Melinda Gates) 재단의 지원으로 <라트비아 국립 도서관>과 라트비아 국내의 900여 개의 도서관을 단일 네트워크로 통합해주는 첨단기술인 라이트(Light) 네트워크를 구성하여, 인터넷을 통해 도서관이 제공하는 디지털화된 자료들을 라트비아 전역에서 공유할 수 있도록 하였다. 다양한 기관과 개인들의 협력을 통해 완성된 결과물인 <라트비아 국립 도서관>은 1999년 유네스코 공식 후원 프로젝트로 선정되었고, 도서관의 디자인과 시공은 해당 분야의 뛰어난 전문가들로 구성된 협의회의 감독하에 진행되었다. 2014년 1월 18일, 라트비아에서 책을 사랑하는 시민들이 함께 모여 만든 2,014m에 이르는 인간 고리를 통해 구 국립 도서관으로부터 새로 완성된 빛의 성까지 손에 손을 거쳐 최초의 장서를 이전하는 기념 행사가 진행되었고, 이는 리가를 유럽 문화의 중심지의 반열에 올려 놓는 감동적이고 위대한 의식이었다. 그리고 2015년 상반기에 예정된 모든 주요 EU 지도자 회의들의 행사장으로 <라트비아 국립 도서관>이 선정되었다는 것은 새로 세워진 건물의 위상과 가치를 잘 설명해준다. 글: 재니스 드립프 The new library building in the centre of Riga is both a spatial symbol and a functional place of cognition equipped with state of the art technology. The pyramidal structure which rises 68m high on the Daugava riverbank opposite the historic city centre has been the most significant investment in cultural infrastructure since the establishment of the Latvian State and is one of the largest cultural buildings in Northern Europe in the 21st century. Back in 1989 the world renowned Latvian born architect Gunnar Birkerts drew the first sketch of the building - an expressive image of Modernism inspired by nation’s age-old cultural traditions what was further developed together with Modris Gelzis and other Latvian architects and engineers. Thanks to its content and concurrent processes for reestablishment of the national state the building acquired a symbolic and meaningful name: the Castle of Light. Remarkably, Gunnar Birkerts is well-known in world architecture for his skilful use of light in 19 libraries, several churches, museums and other structures he has designed in the USA. The presence of light in the is significant in the atrium bringing together 8 levels and in the reading rooms providing excellent views of the old town of Riga. The National Library is a place where collections of national printed materials are stored and provided for reading and exploration. The building can store up to 8 million units of printed materials with 350,000 books provided for free access, and its size of 40,455 m2 allows simultaneously serving 1,000 visitors. A 450 seat conference/ concert hall and transformable meeting rooms of various sizes are suitable venues for conferences, congresses and concerts. The library contains a book museum, exhibition halls, a bookshop, an internet cafe and a restaurant. Taking advantage of modern technology, the and nearly 900 other libraries in Latvia are interlinked within the network of Light - a single network of digital resources available on the internet throughout the country which was set up with the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The completed is a result of joint efforts of many institutions and individuals. In 1999 the project received the official UNESCO patronage and support, the design and construction of the building have been evaluated by a panel of prominent experts. On 18 January 2014, book lovers in Latvia are forming a symbolic 2,014m long human chain to transfer the first books from hand to hand from the old National Library to the new Castle of Light - it is a significant and emotional opening event as Riga becomes the European Capital of Culture.
